What is alimentary sovereignty?

Alimentary sovereignty is the principle by which each State is entitled to choose its food supply freely in accordance with collective regional or national interest.

In southern European countries, where the notion originated, abiding by this principle has become synonymous with the survival of farming.

In Switzerland, and particularly in Geneva, the issue is more one of re-aligning agriculture with its traditional role – that of producing basic products for local inhabitants.

Crucial in ensuring a healthy future for farming is awareness of the multifunctional role of farming, which includes conserving natural resources and maintaining the rural landscape, as set forth in Article of 104 of the Constitution.
