The Domaine de l’Agriculture (DAGE) launched the “Genève Région – Terre Avenir” label with the backing of producers, distributors, consumers, unions and the authorities. The label, a pioneering first in Switzerland, was the brainchild of an official working group. It not only gives Geneva products an identity and showcases local agriculture – it furthers partnership between farmers and retailers, including big distribution chains like Migros, Manor and Coop. The label also enhances communication between farming communities and metro area residents and opens doors for new and mutually beneficial opportunities for producers, retailers and consumers alike. Finally, the label attests to genuine commitment on the part of the canton’s producers. A technical commission presided over by Geneva’s cantonal chemist manages the label. Members of the commission include representatives from the various farming sectors, farming and farm worker unions, control organisms, and consumer protection organizations. The Secretariat is located at the Domaine de l’Agriculture (DAGE).
The ‘Genève Région-Terre Avenir’ label embodies four principles: - Quality. Diversity, freshness and taste characterize Geneva’s agricultural products, which are farmed with respect for the environment and marked by the refusal to grow or raise genetically modified plants and animals. - Proximity. Buying products from Geneva and the free zones not only cuts down on transport, it fosters confidence between farmers and consumers. - Traceability. Knowing where food comes from makes it possible to trace it through every step of production, all the way from farm and field to the table. - Fairness. ‘Buying Geneva’ is a guarantee that all those who farm the products have equitable working conditions and are properly remunerated, and that collective agreements are respected.
