Apples and pears Fruit is cultivated on over 100 hectares of land in the Canton of Geneva. Over 72 hectares are devoted to growing some ten varieties of apple. Pears are the second most prevalent fruit. Pear orchards fill 3.5 hectares. The fruit harvest begins in early September and ends towards the end of October, when varieties that ripen later are picked. While this is the ideal period to buy the fruit, certain varieties keep well and can be bought year round. Apple juice is available year round.
