Horticulture has a proud history in Geneva. In 1887, Edmond Vaucher created the first horticultural school in the French-speaking part of Switzerland. The school was at Châtelaine, on what is now the rose garden in the Parc des Franchises. Little by little the center acquired a reputation for excellence and attracted students from all over the country. From 1974 to 1976, the school gradually moved to the commune of Jussy on Geneva’s Left Bank, where it was re-baptized “Centre de Lullier” after the hamlet where it is located. The institution, which has over 40 hectares of grounds, is now called the “Centre professionnel et l'École d'ingénieur HES”. The professional center trains horticulturists and florists, while the engineering school offers an education in agronomy, landscape design, and nature management.
